What programs does the school offer?

The Department awards Bachelor of Arts degrees in Dance, offering three concentrations: (1) Dance Performance, Choreography, and Theory; (2) Dance Education; and 3) Applied Dance, a dance degree track that may be attractive to double majors. Students who wish to extend dance study beyond the BA curriculum and propose their own projects do so through the Certificate for Advanced Dance Studies. In partnership with the professional dance company, Charlotte Ballet, the Department offers a Professional Training Certificate in Dance for advanced ballet training. Students may also audition for the Musical Theatre Certificate, a collaboration among the Departments of Music, Theatre, and Dance. A Minor in Dance is also available. Cert – Advanced Studies, Professional Training, Musical Theatre, Minor, BA, BA – Dance Ed.

The Department of Dance is a diverse community where students access many different dance styles. Modern and contemporary dance, classical and contemporary ballet, and dance forms of the African diaspora are our focuses.

The School of Theatre and Dance is dedicated to providing superior professional dance training to undergraduate students through physical, intellectual, and aesthetic engagement with dance in the context of a comprehensive liberal arts education. Our rigorous requirements engage students in a diverse curriculum that includes a carefully designed progression of technique courses, in addition to the theoretical and applied courses in Dance History, Composition, Improvisation, Dance Media and Technology, Kinesiology, and Production. Students will work with our acclaimed and dedicated faculty who will nurture and challenge them to hone their technical skills and define their individual artistic voice, preparing them for professional and academic careers in dance. Our esteemed alumni are found around the globe as performers, choreographers, dance educators, arts administrators, scholars, and solo artists. Our programs offer students artistic opportunities to perform in up to two dance mainstage productions, four theatre mainstage productions, and two ECU Storybook productions per year in the McGinnis Theatre, in the black box Studio Theatre, or in ECU’s Wright Auditorium. Students will also have the opportunity to perform in faculty and student choreographed pieces, workshop events, as well as student run club performances. East Carolina University is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.
